Moxibustion
Moxibustion Therapy
Many people associate Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with acupuncture and herbal medicine, but Moxibustion is another highly effective TCM therapy that uses heat to create therapeutic effects. At SAGE Wellness Center, we use mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) or ai ya (a type of mugwort) in its pure or crushed form to produce heat, which stimulates blood circulation and promotes digestive health.
How Does Moxibustion Therapy Work?
Moxibustion is based on the TCM theory of Qi (energy) channels, similar to acupuncture. The goal is to strengthen Qi by applying heat to specific acupoints. The heat generated by burning moxa wool helps remove stagnation from the body, improving the function of blood vessels and organs. It’s particularly beneficial for addressing cold stagnation, where the body experiences low energy and poor circulation. In cases where acupuncture alone may not be sufficient, moxibustion can be an excellent complementary treatment.
Types of Moxibustion
At SAGE Wellness Center, we offer both direct and indirect moxibustion, depending on the patient’s condition and the physician’s prescription:
- Direct Moxibustion: Moxa wool is burned and placed directly on the acupuncture points. The heat stimulates circulation and enhances healing.
- Indirect Moxibustion: In this method, moxa sticks are held close to the skin without direct contact. The warmth generated directs blood flow to the target areas. A tiger warmer (a device used in indirect moxibustion) can also be used, with buffers like garlic, ginger, or salt placed between the skin and moxa stick for enhanced effects.
- Acu-Moxibustion: This technique involves wrapping small balls of moxa around acupuncture needles. As the needles are inserted, the heat from the moxa boosts the effects of acupuncture therapy, leading to more powerful results.
“V-Steam Herbal Therapy” (Fumigation)
Fumigation is an ancient practice that involves the use of steamed medicinal herbs to promote healing. For women, the steam is directed to the womb, vagina, and anus, while men receive it through the anus.
Effects of Fumigation Therapy:
- Sterilization: Helps treat conditions like itchiness, eczema, and infections in the genital area.
- Pain Relief: Enhances blood circulation in the lower abdomen, offering relief from period pain, back pain, and other discomforts.
- Anti-inflammatory: Alleviates inflammation, making it effective for conditions like bladder infections, prostate issues, and more.
- Recovery: Improves white blood cell count, aiding in faster recovery and cell regeneration.
- Nutrition: The medicinal materials release nutrients like cineol and amylase, which enhance skin health and elasticity.
- Fat Removal: Promotes blood circulation, helping to reduce abdominal fat and improve metabolism.
- Contraction: Useful for postnatal recovery, helping the womb and vagina regain tone after childbirth.
- Beauty Treatment: Improves skin health by addressing acne, spots, and other skin issues.
